Safe & Secure Environments For Students

It's vitally important in today's learning environments for learners to feel safe and secure if we wish to maximize learning potentials and outcomes. Educators at all levels play integral and key parts in ensuring the learning environments promote and sustain safe and secure practices at all times. Preventing violent actions is one component of ensuring safety however, close attention also needs to be given to social and emotional realms in support of strong mental health among all learners.

District administrators play key roles in ensuring safety and security for all learners across a district. Proactive district administrators seek to stay in tune with laws and legislative actions impacting the safety and security of learners. Robust and effective communication systems are foundational for district administrators to be effective in establishing sustainable safety and security protocols. As district administrators define components necessary to ensure the safety and security of all learners, there needs to be clear communication channels and opportunities for feedback from learners across the district to ensure needs are being met. As district administrators seek open and honest advice from the learners supported by their structures, they are empowered to make adjustments which lead to personalized needs being met. Social media and technology monitoring protocols need to be in place by district administrators however, more importantly, district administrators need to establish adequate digital citizenship resources and growth opportunities for all learners. It is vitally important to support learners with understanding the ethical uses of technology versus simply monitoring them so there can be continued growth and development as well as shared accountability. Effective growth in learning and understanding will lead to a reduced need for oversight. Ultimately, district administrators need to ensure they are accessible for support and guidance at all times to all learners they lead within a district.

Building administrators play highly important roles in ensuring safety and security within their buildings by understanding the needs and supports of the learners within the building. Frequent check-ins, surveys, and community discussions lead to shared decision making processes based on evidence that support all learner needs and develop supportive communities for all learners within the building. Building administrators need to keep a "pulse" on their building at all times and strive to be proactive in developing healthy, respectful, and contributing learners within their community. As building administrators lead with in-depth understandings of district-wide supports and plans, they can effectively create structures and protocols to ensure safety and security are daily processes throughout the building.

Educators play perhaps one of the most important roles in ensuring safety and security of all learners as they have the closest and most consistent contact with younger learners in the learning community. Educators who have daily contact and develop deep relationships with learners create a network of support in which proactive actions are easily infused. As educators see or sense issues of concern, the issues can be addressed through supportive conversations or possible necessary involvement of building and district administrators. Educators play integral and important roles in ensuring communication of any safety and security issues at all times. As educators are supported with efficient and open communication channels, they are equipped to share vital information in timely fashions which can encourage appropriate actions and responses. As educators continue to be aware of issues within learning environments, they can provide information and suggestions to continue sustaining and growing the culture of safety and security.

Each of these contributors plays a vital role in the safety and security across educational environments. Without any one role actively involved, educational environments quickly become vulnerable to safety and security issues posing potential threats to learners. As the district administrator, building administrator and educator collaborate to ensure safety and security is a top priority for all learners, successful and productive learning environments will flourish in growth and achievement for everyone involved.
